Few things in the world of bikepacking are truly universal. We all favour different bike setups, bag configurations, clothing choices, and sleep systems. Some of us rock rim brake ATBs and cruise our local backroads, while others prefer slacked-out hardtails and gnarly singletrack adventures. It’s the diversity found in bikepacking that makes our community thrive. But the one thing that unites us all is food. Food plays an integral part in every bikepacking trip, every adventure, and everyone’s every day. We travel for it, gather around it, and celebrate with it. In our opinion, food is as much a part of the bikepacking experience as the dirt itself.
We’re Sam and Bec, a food-obsessed bikepacking couple that’s ridden (and eaten) on five continents. In 2019, we traded rent for a tent and set off on a world bicycle tour from Australia that hasn’t really ended. High on the feeling that only a first bike tour can bring, we rode across South East Asia and quickly learnt the importance of real food on a bikepacking trip. Don’t get us wrong, we played the junk food jukebox many times and spent months dining on packet ramen à la kerbside, top-tube french fries, and sugary gummy worms. But soon enough, our bodies craved real food.
Lucky for us, Sam was already a keen cook and anything but shy. Quickly, conversations with friendly roadside cooks morphed into spontaneous cooking classes. New tastes, new techniques, and new ingredients were unlocked. All of a sudden, our world tour took on new meaning. Food became our North Star, and we travelled high and low in search of the best dishes each country could offer. We adapted the recipes we were learning to suit the constraints of travelling by bike, filling our mouths with new flavours and our journals with new recipes. We developed recipes that not only fed us day to day on the road but also told the story of the people, cultures, and cuisines we were experiencing by bike.
The idea of creating a cookbook though was never really on our minds. It was only when we started cooking on bikepacking trips in Sardinia, New Zealand, and Spain that we realised just how little information existed about bikepacking food online.
One evening, we perched up in a small hut on top of the Old Ghost Road in New Zealand. It was cold and wet and miserable. Amidst the hikers and mountain bikers, the two-minute noodle ninjas, and the squashed sandwich snackers, we whipped out the fresh ingredients for our red Thai curry. As soon as the spice paste hit the pan, the tang of tamarind, kick of ginger, and bite of chilli flooded the hut. One curious look led to another, and suddenly strangers became new friends. Food was the catalyst for new connections. It was the springboard for conversation and the vehicle for friendship. We ate together, laughed together and in that moment, The Bikepacking Cookbook was born.
