Earlier this year, I continued my obsession with the Tour Te Waipounamu when I set about filming the third edition of New Zealand’s biannual bikepacking ultra race. The event has firmly established itself on the international bikepacking calendar, and the 2024 edition promised to be the most competitive yet. After the success of my film South, which documented the inaugural edition of this race, I was keen to take a slightly different approach this time around. Fronting Up focuses on what it takes to stay in contention and ultimately make it from one end of the South Island down to the most southerly tip of the land known as Te Waipounamu. We witness the riders transcending the changing landscape through the heart of its varied interior often engulfed by its sheer scale in all its bleak, harsh, and beautiful glory.
